Alex Borstein was born as the daughter of Judy and Irving Borstein, both of whom work as mental health professionals. She has two siblings both of whom are boys. She was brought up in a Jewish family that had its roots in Germany, Hungary, Angola, Poland, Mongolia, and Russia.

Alex attended the San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. She later went on get trained in improve at the ACME Comedy Theater. It was here that she met Jackson Douglas, who not only became her writing partner but also turned out to be her future husband.

Alex was proposed to by Jackson, while a MADtv skit was being taped. The couple took their marriage vows in 1999. In September 2008, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy, whom they named Barnaby Borstein Douglas.

Alex is adept at playing the harp. In an interview given in 2004, Alex had said that she wanted quit acting and enjoy the experience of being a full time mother, but was unable to do so as Seth MacFarlane did not permit her to quit.

Alex started her career as a writer for an ad agency where she used to write print ads for Barbie. She left the job later, when she began to work with Jackson on the animated series Casper and Pinky and the Brain, and took up full time writing. She has since worked as a writer for projects like Life at Five Feet, MADtv, Drop Dead Gorgeous (In a Down-to-Earth Bombshell Sort of Way) and Family Guy etc.

In addition she has also contributed in the soundtrack of Family Guy, which she has also produced along with the projects Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, Drop Dead Gorgeous (In a Down-to-Earth Bombshell Sort of Way) and Take Alex to Work Day.

Alex has also worked as an actress on shows like Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Life at Five Feet, Gilmore Girls, Slacker Cats, Robot Chicken, MADtv, Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, Family Guy and many more. Her upcoming show, The Cleveland Show, is currently being filmed.

Besides proving her acting caliber on the small screen, Alex has also impressed the audiences of the big screen with her histrionics. Her movie projects include, Coyote Ugly, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Seeing Other People, Billy's Dad Is a Fudge-Packer, Good Night, and Good Luck, The Pre Nup and The Lookout. Her upcoming movie For Christ's Sake is all set to hit theaters in the upcoming months.

During her career in the entertainment industry, Alex has been honored with one award and has earned the nomination s to two other awards. In 2006, she won the DVD Exclusive Award under the category of Best Screenplay (for a DVD Premiere Movie) for Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. In 2008, she was jointly nominated with her co-actors of Family Guy for an Emmy Award under the category of Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or More). In 2006, she along with her co-stars from Good Night, and Good Luck, were jointly nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award under the category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

In Family Guy, she has lent her voice for Lois Griffin, the matriarch of the Griffin family and the wife of Peter Griffin. She is content with her routine of being a more than average housewife/mother. Besides being a housewife, she also manages her piano lessons, kids, and husband every single day of her life. At the same time, she also avoids her infant son Stewie who intends to execute Lois even though she is ignorant of the fact as she does not pay much attention to what her kids have to say.
